Our love of One Fawn Ridge

It was the spring of 2018 and we had just sold our software business. We built it over 13 years, reaching 20 employees and 350 client organizations scattered around the US and Canada… Co-running a company while also selling it is very demanding so when we were done, we sought a way to treat ourselves.

Enter: One Fawn Ridge.

This spectacular house ticked all our boxes and more. The space, light, solitude, view – everything was joy-inducing. We were deliriously happy when the seller accepted our offer and we moved in.

In the ensuing years we made the most of the house. Our annual holiday party and a few other gatherings easily exceeded 150 guests. We greatly enjoyed hosting small dinner parties in various parts of the property – the dining room, out on the grassy meadow, in the cozy “courtyard” and more.

The sunrises (and moonrises!) into the master bedroom over the nearby ridgeline and through one of the grand oak trees are particular favorites. On sunny days the light reflects off the pool up into the ceiling of the house, a treat we never tired of.

Our sons and their friends were magnetically drawn to it and weekends and summers saw innumerable games of badminton, croquet, ping-pong as well as super fun movie nights, pool parties and sleepovers. Touring incredulous friends through the fallout shelter at the end of the house walkthrough never failed to delight.

Spending all those months of Covid at Fawn was fortuitous to say the least – we could easily social distance on the outside property and in the open garage. That really helped our sanity and mental health. Eventually we let the kids camp in the grassy meadow with their friends – each in their own tent and well-spaced apart – where they’d set up a sheet to project movies and play games.

Our human neighbors on the lane are lovely and we enjoyed forming friendships with them. But we saw our animal neighbors more often, including owls, turkey vultures, foxes, hawks, and of course deer and other creatures common to Marin. Sometimes we’d hear coyotes in the canyon below as they had some “spirited” conversations with each other.

We’ve always been “walkers” and some of our favorite trails are very near: Canyon Trail, which starts behind the stables (built in the 1930s) just below the house; Concrete Pipe, less than a mile away; and the rest of the incredible Water District land including Mount Tamalpais, Lake Lagunitas and other lakes. I frequently mountain biked the “Gentleman’s Loop” up to Five Corners, Shaver Grade and the lakes.

And the house was great for our quirky hobbies, such as those I led from the upper deck into the open space: Drone flights, shooting the potato cannon over 100 yards and looking into the heavens at the moon and Jupiter and its moons from the great telescope my father-in-law gave us.

We will always love One Fawn Ridge and fully expect its next owners to find their own love for the home too.
